Direct Support Personnel Implements Personalized Care Plans
The Direct Support Personnel (DSP) supports a child or adult with an intellectual or developmental disability to increase their personal self-determination and improve their own independence.
Direct Support Personnel Home Based Support Services include:
- Consistency in personal care routines
- Teaching the individual to acquire new skills and refine existing ones in the area of personal care tasks and other activities of daily living, communication, decision-making and socialization
- Education to individuals so they can make informed decisions and advocate for themselves
- Exploration of an individual’s strengths and build support to assist the individual achieve their goals
- Reminders of how to do activities when they are physically capable of doing them
- Documentation of health care, mental health or behavioral needs and related maintenance needs
- Transportation to doctor’s appointment, pick up prescriptions and groceries, shopping, visiting family and friends or pursuing recreational activities and community inclusion activities
- Confidentiality and informed consent
